Reflecting the World

Kyle in Cambodia

October 14, 2009 · 1 Comment

My son Kyle is in Cambodia working on various issues relating to the IT system at the University of Cambodia.  He is there as a part of the Global Leadership Center program at Ohio University.  GLC is a co-curricular non-degree granting program at Ohio which lists the following as its “Vision”  “The Global Leadership Center strives to develop internationally-minded, locally engaged leaders in all walks of life.”  He was asked to go on the trip by the leader of GLC, who promised a fine learning experience.

Imagine our surprise to learn that when Kyle walked in to the University of Cambodia on his first day there, after traveling around the world, the people he was to work with did not know he was coming!  Now, to be fair, the president of the university did know, but it seems Kyle’s GLC director had some problem with Kyle before his trip and ceased helping Kyle make plans.  For example, he was required to book his own airline itinerary and find himself transportation and lodgings on the way to this foreign land.  Now THAT is what I call a learning experience!  Why did I never think of that?  All I needed to do was send my son around the world using the technique an eagle uses to teach an an eaglet how to fly.  Just push him out of the nest!

When Kyle returns I’ll surely look into this set of circumstances.  I find myself wondering if the president of Ohio University would appreciate having one of his offspring treated the same way.

All of the foregoing notwithstanding, Kyle is learning a lot on this trip – as much about himself as about the IT needs of the university.  He’s made some good friendships and has grown to appreciate the Cambodian people, food and customs.  I’d encourage you to check out Kyle’s blog, listed on the blogroll to the right.

Haha, its not that he had a problem with ME, its more or less that I was not on his time table (as I had no idea he was preparing to travel to India) before he left.

I wouldn’t say that I’m even upset at the way in which things were handled though, it was a good experience figuring out how to do all that on my own haha.

    :)
